A product of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Matheny played for the Milwaukee Brewers and Toronto Blue Jays before joining the St. Louis Cardinals in 2000.  In his five years witht the Redbirds, Mike established himself as the premier defensive catcher in the National League, winning Gold Gloves in 2000, 2003 and 2004.  He helped the Cardinals to four post seasons during his stay in St. Louis.  In 2005, his first year with the San Francisco Giants, Matheny earned his fourth career Gold Glove.  Mike is one of only three Major League catchers to play 100 games without a single error.

Mike was recently named the new skipper for the reigning World Champion St. Louis Cardinals.
