2011 Enshrinement Ceremonies 

On Sunday, January 30th, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inducted 16 individuals and one program and named the ninth John Q. Hammons Founder’s Award recipient during its 2011 Enshrinement Ceremonies.   In addition, the Hall named its 20th Missouri Sports Legend. During the ceremonies, the Hall of Fame honored a longtime volunteer and coach and an exceptional athlete from Special Olympics of Missouri and called special attention to several Sports Achievement Award winners.    The Killian Group of Companies was the presenting sponsor of the annual event, along with associate sponsors, Advertising Plus, Hiland Dairy, Hillyard, Inc. and White River Valley Electric Cooperative.

The festivities kicked-off with a reception on Sunday, January 30th at the Hall of Fame from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The induction ceremonies took place at the University Plaza Hotel & Convention Center, with the banquet starting at 4:00 p.m., followed immediately by the Induction Ceremonies. 

These time changes were made in cooperation with Missouri State University, as the Bears men’s basketball team had a rare Sunday evening start. The 7:05 tip-off at the JQH Arena, featured the Bears hosting the conference rival University of Northern Iowa, and was broadcasted on ESPNU.

By changing our starting times, guests attended all of the Enshrinement ceremonies, as well as the MSU game. 


Priest Holmes – Running Back, Kansas City Chiefs

Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Priest Holmes was raised in San Antonio, Texas. Holmes played football at John Marshall High School, where he led his school to the state championship game.  After graduating from high school in 1992, he attended the University of Texas at Austin. In 1997, his NFL Career took him to play for the Baltimore Ravens, where he earned a ring in Super Bowl XXXV. In 2001, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs where he set team records in career rushing attempts, career rushing yards, career rushing touchdowns, and total touchdowns and was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2002.

Tom Herr – Second Baseman, St. Louis Cardinals

A fan favorite during the 1980’s, Tom Herr starred for the St. Louis Cardinals in three World Series’.  During the '85 season, he set career highs in nearly every statistical category, including an amazing 110 RBI’s, which came along with only 8 home runs. Tom was selected to the 1985 All Star team for his efforts.  In a 13-season career, he batted .271 with 28 home runs and 574 RBI’s in 1514 games. He had 1450 career hits in 5349 at bats. He is best remembered for hitting a walk-off grand slam in extra innings against the New York Mets on April 18, 1987.

Kenny Schrader – Automobile Racing, Fenton, MO

Despite having a full-time NASCAR ride for over twenty years, Fenton, Missouri’s Kenny Schrader frequently races at local tracks between NASCAR races. The 1985 NASCAR Rookie of the Year and owner of Ken Schrader Racing races in many racing divisions, and has been successful in every division he has stepped into. He owns a dirt late model and dirt open wheel modified car. Both of these cars, along with his Camping World Truck Series and ARCA series cars, are sponsored by Federated Auto Parts.

Mike Matheny – Catcher, St. Louis Cardinals

A product of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Matheny played for the Brewers and Blue Jays before joining the Cardinals in 2000. In his five years with the Redbirds, Mike established himself as the premier defensive catcher in the National League, winning Gold Gloves in 2000, 2003 and 2004. He helped the Cardinals to four post seasons during his stay in St. Louis. In 2005, his first year with the San Francisco Giants, Matheny earned his fourth career Gold Glove. Mike is one of only three Major League catchers to play 100 games without a single error.

Johnny Roland – Running Back, St. Louis Cardinals

A native of Corpus Christi, TX, Johnny Roland played college football at the University of Missouri from 1962 to 1965 winning three All-Big Eight Conference honors before being named an All American his final year. The 1966 NFL Rookie of the Year, Roland played for seven seasons with the Cardinals, and became the franchise's leading rusher at the time of his retirement.  He then went on to play for one season with the New York Giants. Johnny was an assistant coach for the 1985 Super Bowl Champion Chicago Bears.

Jack Emmitt – Fisherman, Springfield, MO

Jack Emmitt moved to Springfield, MO in 1961 to attend Southwest Missouri State University and shortly thereafter took a job in a sporting goods store. Some 50 years later, the Tennessee native has landed game fish from all across the western hemisphere. Jack was the first Fishing Department Manager at a company called Bass Pro Shops in 1981, and left that position to become the company’s fishing consultant ten years ago. Jack, along with fellow Hall of Famer Charlie Campbell, has hosted KYTV’s Fishing Tips program for 25 years.

Jess Bolen – Baseball Coach, Cape Girardeau Capahas

An outstanding high school player in the 1950’s, Jess took the helm of the Capahas, semi-pro baseball team in 1967. In his 44 years of coaching Jess Ray Bolen Sr., has amassed an incredible 1,384 wins against only 372 losses. His teams have won 17 state/regional tournaments and have gone to the National Baseball Congress tournament 29 times, with numerous top-ten finishes. His 1995 and 2007 teams finished seventh in the nation, while his 1998 squad finished fourth.

Vernon “Hap” Whitney – Wrestling, Columbia, MO

Never tipping the scales at more than 127 pounds, Vernon “Hap” Whitney was the first high school wrestler to win four state championships. His wrestling prowess took him to Purdue University where, at 130 pounds, he won the 1955 National AAU Championship and a Big 10 wrestling title. Taking over as head coach of Missouri in 1964, Whitney led the Tigers to a number of “firsts”, including the first and only undefeated wrestling team in Mizzou’s history. “Hap” is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Missouri Wrestling Hall of Fame and the University of Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame.

Stephanie Phillips – Girls Basketball Coach, Kickapoo High School, Springfield, MO

Under Phillips, the Kickapoo Lady Chiefs were known as one of the top teams in the state of Missouri.  She led her team to a 214-38 record in nine seasons, Class 5 state titles in 2003 and 2005, and a third-place finish in the 2009 – 2010 season. She won two state championships as a player at Springfield Catholic High School before going on to college.  After graduation, Phillips joined the coaching staff at Southwest Baptist, and then became an assistant coach at the University of Missouri before taking over at Kickapoo. Stephanie passed away on July 10 after a nearly three-year battle with colon cancer.

Randy Morrow – Football Coach, Warsaw High School

Randy just finished his 33rd year of coaching, his 20th at Warsaw, where he has a 184-57 won-loss ratio.  His overall coaching record is 258-85-3 ties.  During his tenure at WHS, his teams have won 2 State Championships, 2 second place finishes, and 8 semi-final appearances. His teams have won the district 17 of his 20 years at Warsaw.  He has been chosen coach of the year in 1988, 1990, and 1993.  Morrow was inducted into the Missouri Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

Ray Cliffe – Football Player, Coach and Official

Although Ray’s name is well known in the football circles around the state, this St. Louis native spent 70 years playing, coaching or officiating six other sports. From 1955 to 1973, Ray served as the Head Football for Cleveland High School in St. Louis. During that 19 year tenure Cliffe led the Dutchmen to a 121 - 62 -13 record which included three Public High League (PHL) Championships and two undefeated seasons. He also coached the school’s baseball team to two PHL titles.

Monsignor Louis F. Meyer – Soccer, St. Louis

The man affectionately known as the “Soccer Priest” is a member of five Halls of Fame. Just two years after being ordained a priest, Louis F. Meyer along with Msgr. Lloyd Sullivan took over the operations of the Catholic Youth Council (CYC) in St. Louis. Starting with just 912 children, the program today boasts over 90,000 participants each year and an estimated 2 million over the course of it history. The program has expanded to include not only soccer, but baseball, basketball, volleyball and softball.

Linda Dollar – Volleyball Coach, Missouri State University, Springfield, MO

As a student athlete at Southwest Missouri State University (SMS), Linda Dollar participated in volleyball, softball, basketball, tennis, golf and field hockey. After spending one season as Head Volleyball Coach at the University of Kansas, Dollar assumed the same position at Missouri State University, a post she held for the next 24 years. In that span, Linda’s teams compiled a record of 758 – 266 – 21, the second highest win total in Division 1. She was also the first coach to reach the 700 win plateau.

Dick Zitzmann –President, Sports Classics, Inc.

Richard Zitzmann, age 55, is the President of Sport Classics, Inc. based in St. Louis, Missouri. For the past 20 years, Sport Classics, Inc. has acted as the exclusive business agent for Baseball Hall of Famer's Stan Musial, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, & Red Schoendienst. Dick Zitzmann also works closely with many other Hall Of Fame players such as, Steve Carlton, Gaylord Perry, Ferguson Jenkins, Ernie Banks, Harmon Killebrew, Whitey Herzog, Rollie Fingers, Al Kaline, Brooks Robinson & Bob Feller. Additionally, Mr. Zitzmann has acted as Vice President of Stan The Man, Inc. for over 20 years. Dick and his wife Sharon reside in Des Peres, Mo.

Dr. Mildred Barnes – Women’s Basketball Coach, University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg, MO

Serving as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Central Missouri State University from 1971 to 1980, Dr. Barnes’s teams posted a 156 – 63 record. That 71.2% mark came against Division I and Division II schools. Against DI schools her record was 95 – 33 and against Big Ten institutions, she was a perfect 8 – 0. Her teams qualified for the AIAW National Championship twice. Dr. Barnes is a member of five Halls of Fame. As a former athlete, she competed in lacrosse, field hockey, badminton and tennis.

Ed Crenshaw – Basketball Coach, St. Louis, MO

A graduate of Sumner High School in St. Louis, Ed went on to play college basketball at Quincy College. In the years that followed, Crenshaw distinguished himself as one of the finest basketball coaches in the state. Between the years of 1961 and 1996, Coach Crenshaw split time between St. Dominic High School and University City High School. At the close of his coaching career, Ed had posted a 677 – 266 record, for a 71% winning percentage. Crenshaw is currently number ten on the all time list for wins in a career, in Missouri high school basketball.

Missouri State University Handball Program – Springfield, MO

A program which started with very little fanfare back in 1987 has developed into one of the most nationally known, respected and feared handball teams in America today. With only six years of experience under its belt, Dr. Tommy Burnett’s MSU team captured its first National Team Championship in 1993, with the women taking first and the men placing second in the nation.  They would close out the 90’s by winning seven straight National Team Championships. By March of 2010, they had won 11 National Team Championships, capturing the Women’s Division 10 times and the Men’s Division seven times.

Gary Filbert – Basketball, Missouri Sports Legend

Gary Filbert was an outstanding basketball player for St, Joseph Benton HS, the University of Missouri and the United States Marines. After coaching high school basketball and serving as the first head coach of the newly formed Missouri Western State College basketball team, Gary signed on as an assistant coach to Mizzou’s Norm Stewart. Later he would embark on the Executive Director’s position of the Show-Me State Games, and took the program to a new level of success. While executing his duties as an assistant at MU, Filbert became the Executive Secretary of the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association.  Filbert was instrumental in working closely with Founder John Q. Hammons in creating the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and is now being named the 20th Sports Legend of that organization.

Central Bank – Lebanon, MO   John Q. Hammons Founders AwardCentral Bank, its local Board of Directors, Officers and Employees, have been a significant part of Lebanon and Laclede County since 1917. Local ownership began with I.T. Curry who passed the bank on to his son, George Curry. George then passed it on to his son, Craig Curry. With over 100 employees to serve all of their customer's financial needs Central Bank still remains under the leadership of the Curry family. Central Bank has a long association with the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, dating back to 1997.
